Kurosawa x Shakespeare | Steven Spielberg once referred to Kurosawa as ‘the pictorial Shakespeare of our time’. Certainly, Kurosawa’s panache for staging, the dramatic flair and pathos all align with the Bard’s manner of storytelling. Filmhouse presents Kurosawa x Shakespeare, a duo of films to accompany Ran (1985), which was inspired by King Lear, that were also inspired by Shakespeare’s plays. These feature Throne of Blood (1957), in which the action of Macbeth is brought to a feudal era Japan with elements of Noh-style drama, and The Bad Sleep Well (1960)*, a modern-era neo-noir loosely based on Hamlet which examines the rampant post-war corporate corruption so well that the script had to be altered to ensure it didn’t resemble any real-life corruption case too closely. Filmhouse Edinburgh | Multiple dates/times next week below:
Ran (4k Restoration)
The Boy and the Suit of Lights + Q&A | Filmed over five years, this intimate coming-of-age documentary - Inma de Reyes’ feature documentary debut - traces the life of Borja, a young boy growing up in Castellón, a coastal town in Spain where the legacy of bullfighting casts a long shadow. Borja inherits the weight of his grandfather Matías’s unfulfilled dream—to become a professional bullfighter. For Matías, it’s more than tradition; it’s a hope for escape from generational poverty. But for Borja, the path ahead is narrow, hemmed in by orange groves, fishing boats, and the blood-soaked sand of the bullring. As he grapples with his future, the film captures the quiet tension between progress and tradition in a place where choices are few and dreams come at a price. This screening is presented in collaboration with Cinetopia:DOC and is part of Doc Screen, an initiative run by Scottish Documentary Institute (SDI) in partnership with Filmhouse. | Filmhouse Edinburgh | 12 July, 6pm

Cinemasters: David Cronenberg Season | Canadian director David Cronenberg began making low-budget horror films in the late 1960s, and within a decade had established himself as a boundary-pushing visionary in the Toronto scene. His unique take on the genre, often branded ‘body horror’, and fascinated with the limits and potential of human bodies and minds, hit the mainstream in the 1980s as Cronenberg accessed bigger budgets and stars with films like The Fly (1986) and Dead Ringers (1988). Never comfortable in the studio system, Cronenberg has remained an independent auteur for his entire career, and as his latest film The Shrouds hits the GFT screens, they’re taking the chance to showcase some of his most unforgettable, disturbing and provocative works. | Glasgow Film Theatre | Multiple dates/times:
