KINOTEKA Polish film festival series:
Katyn- Andrze Wajda focuses on personal stories and a wider human tragedy in this Oscar-nominated film, set against one of the most painful and politically sensitive topics in Polish history: the 1940 massacre of thousands of Polish soldiers and intellectuals in the Katyn forest. A personal project for Wajda, whose father was murdered in the massacre, Katyn poignantly frames historical events through the stories of women looking for the truth about their missing relatives. - 31 March, 5.45pm
AfterImage - In his final film, Wajda returns to previously explored themes of personal and artistic resistance to an authoritarian state and ideology. Based on the life of avant-garde painter and theorist WĆadysĆaw StrzemiĆski, the film chronicles his struggles against expulsion from state institutions, and erasure from a nationâs collective memory, as a result of political and artistic convictions that were at odds with the official Stalinist post-war doctrine. - 2 April 6pm
After Eight + Murewa screening - Scottish Doc Institute is screening for the first time in Edinburgh two award-winning short films that explore stories of coming of age, friendship, community and the harsh realities of racism and incarceration.

Join SDI for this very special evening followed by a post-film discussion moderated by Balenji Mwiche - 1 April, 6.10pmAmelie (25th anniversary) - 23-year-old Amélie is lonely. After an isolating childhood, she moves to Paris and becomes a waitress at the Café des Deux Moulins, a bar restaurant filled with a colourful cast of diners and employees. One night, Amélie happens across a box of treasures hidden in her apartment, left by a little boy in the Fifties, that changes the course of her life. Henceforth, she dedicates herself to giving back to her community, tracking down the owner of these keepsakes, consoling a widowed neighbour and befriending a reclusive artist. When completing these good deeds, she crosses paths with Nino, a photobooth collagist who shares her oddball sensibilities. She quickly falls in love with him. - From Friday 3 April
Radiophrenia Presents: Lost in Transmission #4 + Shona Macnaughton (Live) - Lost in Transmission is a series of events presenting non-English language radio works with subtitled translations in cinema spaces around Scotland. Here, subtitles allow audiences to experience the wealth of radio art available from all over the globe in its original language in the comfortable space of a cinema. This event will include a live performance of a version of Look! She has her eyes wide open by Shona Macnaughton. - 4 April, 2pm
Man Ray: Films by Photographers - Four silent films from the 1920s, created by pioneering photographers who turned their cameras towards motion. Featuring surrealist and experimental documentary works by Man Ray, Joris Ivens, and Ralph Steiner, Films by Photographers captures the rhythm of industry, everyday movement, and the strange beauty of light and the elements. Presented with new electronic scores by Glasgow-based audiovisual duo The Spring Vexation, these four captivating shorts reveal how photographic perspectives shaped some of the most inventive and atmospheric moving images of early cinema. - 5 April, 6.30pm

Labyrinth (40th anniversary) - Frustrated with babysitting on yet another weekend night, Sarah â a teenager with an active imagination â summons the Goblins from her favourite book, Labyrinth, to take her baby step-brother away.Combining music, adventure, comedy and fantasy, this beloved family film boasts a cast of incredible creatures created by the Jim Henson Creature Shop, and stars the late, great David Bowie, who performs five original songs in the role of the Goblin King. 30 March, 12.30pm
The Last Temptation of Christ - Martin Scorceseâs masterful telling of the life of Jesus Christ, his journey through life as he faces the struggles all humans do, and his final temptation on the cross. Starring Willem Dafoe, Harvey Keitel, and Harry Dean Stanton. 1 April, 7.45pm & 2 April, 5pm
McCartney: The Hunt for the Lost Bass - For over 50 years the disappearance of McCartneyâs original Höfner bass has been one of rock ânâ rollâs enduring mysteries. The Quiet Son / Jouer avec le feu (2024) - Pierre (played by Vincent Lindon, Awarded Best Actor in this role at the Venice Film Festival) brings up his two sons alone. Louis, the younger, is doing well at school and getting on in life. Fus, the eldest, becomes close to extreme right-wing groups despite his fatherâs attempts to keep him safe. Film Club - Iâm A Cyborg But Thatâs OK (2006) - The Edinburgh âLike A Book Group But With Filmsâ Group meets every other Thursday to chat films and TV! Itâs a brilliant group, come along! Watch the film in your own time and join us for a chat on the night. Cha Young-goon, who thinks she is a cyborg, is remanded in a mental institution when she electrocutes herself instead of eating food. There, she meets Il-sun, who thinks he can steal peopleâs souls. Youth Screening: No Bears - No Bears (2022), a meta-fictional drama directed by and starring Jafar Panahi, follows two parallel love stories plagued by superstition, tradition, and political oppression. While living in a rural Iranian border village, Panahi remotely directs a film about a couple trying to flee to Europe, while facing suspicion from locals over a controversial, supposedly captured photo. 15-25 Card members can each claim a free ticket for our monthly youth screenings. 31 March, 6.30pm
Itâs Never Over, Jeff Buckley - Rising musician Jeff Buckley had only released one album when he died suddenly in 1997. John Schlesingerâs Marathon Man - John Schlesingerâs âJewish revenge thrillerâ saw him reunite with his Midnight Cowboy star Dustin Hoffman as Babe Levy, the son of a disgraced intellectual who works to clear his fatherâs academic reputation. But when his brother, Doc (Roy Scheider), is brutally murdered, Babe becomes enmeshed in a dangerous conspiracy surrounding Christian Szell (Laurence Olivier), an ex-Nazi and concentration camp torturer. 4 April, 5.30pm & 8 April, 8pm
Moulin Rouge (25th Anniversary) - Baz Luhrmannâs reinvention of the Hollywood musical returns to the big screen for its 25th Anniversary! The screening on Thursday 9 April will be introduced by composer Craig Armstrong, who won a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for his work on the film. 5 April, 4pm & 9 April, 5.30pm

Film Screening - âSisters with Transistorsâ - Directed by Lisa Rovner, SISTERS WITH TRANSISTORS is the remarkable untold story of electronic musicâs female pioneers, composers who embraced machines and their liberating technologies to utterly transform how we produce and listen to music today. Intro to Sound for Animation - Join us for a hands-on experience in adding sounds to animation and creating new experimental noises to make things even more animated! In the introduction to the workshop everyone will be given an animated fragment to add sound to so then later, when we animate our own sequences, we can confidently experiment while already knowing the basics.
