FILM SCREENINGS:
Reclaim The Frame presents HOLLOWAY. + Q&A | HOLLOWAY brings together six women who return to the now-closed Holloway Prison to share deeply personal stories of incarceration, trauma, and transformation. Through their women’s circle, the film explores how failing systems intersect with lived experience, and how sisterhood can create healing and change.
Directed by Daisy-May Hudson and Sophie Compton, this deeply moving documentary feature was made using a unique process of a trauma-informed co-creation with six contributors: Aliyah Ali, Mandy Ogunmokun, Sarah Cassidy, Lady Unchained, Gerrah, and Tamar Mujanay. Scottish premier of Gaza: A Story of Love and War | Join Firefly International for an unforgettable screening of Mike Joseph's empathetic and thought provoking film. This documentary is the product of an encounter between two journalists. Mike Joseph is a Welsh Jewish journalist whose mother barely escaped the Holocaust (the rest of her immediate family weren’t so lucky); Sami Abu Salem is a Palestinian reporter living in Gaza, who has lost family, friends and home in the violence inflicted on Palestinians since October 2023. | Out of the Blue Drill Hall | 30 June, 2025 and 1st July 7pm
The Last Musician of Auschwitz + Live Performance | In partnership with the Edinburgh Jewish Cultural Centre, this special screening opens with a live performance of traditional klezmer music by the University of Edinburgh’s student band, led by Dr. Phil Alexander. The Last Musician of Auschwitz, by Grierson award-winner Toby Trackman, tells the extraordinary story of cellist Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, and other prisoners - Jews, Poles, Soviets, and Roma - who played and created music at the camp, and the role of music as both a weapon of control and manipulation, and a means of survival and resistance amidst the terrors of the Holocaust. | The Cameo | 30 June, 8pm
Bridging the Gap - Outsiders - A collection of short documentaries showcasing those fearless outsiders whose journeys across borders, conflict and time offer inspiring and thought-provoking stories of acceptance, reconciliation and love.
Audiences are encouraged to stay for a post-screening discussion. This screening will be followed by a Q&A/post-film discussion with filmmakers Riad Arfin, Meray Diner and Sarah Grant, moderated by Alexandra Colta.Filmhouse I 1st July, 6 pm
McDonald Road Library Film Club July 2025 | This month, we will be screening a 2013, feature length documentary from a well known film-maker, which examines the radical social and political changes Britain saw in the post-war years; leading to the expansion of the welfare state and founding of the NHS. Featuring archive footage and contemporary interviews, the film showcases the enormous sense of optimism and drive for progress that fuelled these huge social shifts. | McDonald Road library | 2 July, 5.30pm
The Taste of Things (2023) | Juliette Binoche stars in this powerful, award-winning, food-based love story from director Trần Anh Hùng. French with English subtitles, the film will start promptly at 7pm without trailers. Light refreshments will be available for sale. Wheelchair-accessible venue. BABYCLUB: F1® The Movie | In the 1990s, Sonny Hayes was Formula 1's most promising driver until an accident on the track nearly ended his career. Thirty years later, the owner of a struggling Formula 1 team convinces Sonny to return to racing and become the best in the world. Driving alongside the team's hotshot rookie, Sonny soon learns that the road to redemption is not something you can travel alone. Baby Club screenings are for parents and guardians with babies 12 months and under. DOCo: Work-in-Progress Screening | To celebrate our 12th edition (one full year of DOCo!), we're doing something a little different. We'll be showcasing “Your Skin as My Witness” — a work-in-progress installation film by dance artist Laura Fisher, who had been exploring a choreographic relationship with seven copper sculptures since 2020, drawing parallels between the material properties of the copper and the artist’s body, which experiences chronic pain. The evening will begin with a screening of last month’s DOCMA film, #105: THE SELF, followed by Laura’s installation film and an open feedback session. Dog Day Afternoon - 50th Anniversary | From the true story about a Brooklyn bank robbery gone haywire one hot August day comes a gripping, funny Oscar-winning movie capturing star Al Pacino and director Sidney Lumet at the top of their game. A desperate and crazed man (Pacino in his Oscar-nominated role), with the help of an accomplice (John Cazale), takes a local Brooklyn bank hostage with plans to rob it in order to pay for his lover's sex-change operation. Lotte in Weimar - German Cinema | To mark the 150th anniversary of Thomas Mann’s birth, join us for a screening of the film classic Lotte in Weimar. LOTTE IN WEIMAR is the film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Thomas Mann, published in 1939. Mann tells the story of Charlotte Kestner, who, as Goethe's early love, inspired the character of Lotte in his novel 'The Sorrows of Young Werther'. Apocalypse Now - Final Cut | Coppola’s cult classic retelling of Joseph Conrad's short classic Heart of Darkness, set in 1969 during the Vietnam War. The story traces the journey of a special forces captain (Willard) through the violent combat zones of Vietnam on a secret assignment to terminate the life of a field commander called Kurtz, who has set up a ruthless dictatorship.
