FILM SCREENINGS:
OUR PICKS FROM THE FILMHOUSE:
The Presidentâs Cake by Hasan Hadi - While people across 1990s Iraq struggle to survive the war and food shortages, Saddam Hussein requires each school in the country to prepare a cake to celebrate his birthday. Despite her efforts to avoid getting picked, 9-year-old Lamia is chosen among her classmates. The young girl must now use her wits and imagination to gather ingredients for the mandatory cake or face the consequences. Screening all of next week
Queens of Joy - Amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, three drag queens choose to stay. Queens of Joy documents their efforts to stage a charity drag show in support of Ukrainian soldiers, embarking on a moving journey that is both deeply personal and political. The documentary raises important questions about the price of bringing joy to others in a time of devastation, while amplifying LGBTQ+ voices resisting and creating on the frontlines. hosted by Scottish Documentary Institute - 18 Feb, 6pm
Ninotchka - This was the first time Greta Garbo had been seen in a film that was predominantly comic (though it was hardly the first time she'd laughed, as the ads insisted). But her character still had an icy aura, at least at the outset â Garbo plays a Russian comrade staying in Paris on government business, a situation providing writers Wilder, Brackett and Walter Reisch with rich material for impish political jokes. Then she meets the acceptable face of Capitalism in the form of Melvyn Douglas, and succumbs to his suave looks and honeyed voice... 19 Feb, 6pm
The Testament of Ann Lee on 70mm - From award-winning writer-director Mona Fastvold (The World to Come, screenwriter of The Brutalist) comes the extraordinary true legend of Ann Lee, founder of the devotional sect known as the Shakers. Academy Award nominee Amanda Seyfried delivers a career-best performance (nominated for Best Actress gongs at the Golden Globe and Critics' Choice Awards) as the Shaker's irrepressible leader, who preached gender and social equality and was revered by her followers. From 20 Feb onwards, multiple screenings
OUR PICKS FROM THE CAMEO:
Crash (1997) - After getting into a serious car accident, a TV director discovers an underground sub-culture of scarred, omnisexual car-crash victims who use car accidents and the raw sexual energy they produce to try to rejuvenate his sex life with his wife. by David Cronenberg. 16 Feb, 5.15pm
PREVIEW: Wasteman - Wasteman follows parolee Taylor (EE BAFTA 2025 Rising Star Winner David Jonsson) whose hopes of a fresh start are jeopardized by the arrival of new cellmate Dee (Tom Blyth). As Dee takes Taylor under his wing, a vicious attack tests their bond â forcing Taylor to choose between protecting Dee and his own parole chances. 17 Feb, 6.10pm
Paul McCartney: Man on the Run - What happens when you wake up the morning after leaving the most important rock band of all time?
In April 1970, Paul released his first solo album, McCartney, alongside a shocking press release that announced the beloved band had split. When asked what heâd do next, he said his only planâŠwas to grow up. Man on the Run captures Paulâs transformative decade in the wake of The Beatlesâ break-up. Through stunning archival footage, Linda McCartneyâs exceptional photographs, and interviews with Mick Jagger, Chrissie Hynde, Sean Ono Lennon, Mary and Stella McCartney, all the living Wings members, and of course Paul himself, the film examines this time through a uniquely vulnerable lens. 19 Feb, 8pm
A Knightâs Tale 25th Anniversary - A Heath Ledger cult classic! After his master dies, a peasant squire, fueled by his desire for food and glory, creates a new identity for himself as a knight. 21 Feb, 8pm
Wes Andersonâs Bottle Rocket - Upon his release from a mental hospital following a nervous breakdown, the directionless Anthony joins his friend Dignan, who seems far less sane than the former. Dignan has hatched a hair-brained scheme for an as-yet-unspecified crime spree that somehow involves his former boss, the (supposedly) legendary Mr. Henry. 22 Feb, 1.15pm (and all next week)

Following its limited initial release in Greater Orlando and West Germany, Leith Kino is bringing Miami Connection to the Central Belt for a celebration of 'so-bad-it's-good' cinema. It's 84 minutes of 1980s action as told through the lens of writer-director and star Y.K. Kim, a taekwondo instructor with no previous (or later) filmmaking experience. Queer Cinema Sundays: Lesvia + Introduction - Our Queer Cinema Sundays pick for February is Tzeli Hadjidimitriou's Lesvia, a documentary that chronicles 40+ years of lesbian identity and conflict between the locals of a small village on the Greek island of Lesvos and lesbians who arrived searching for love, freedom and community. 22 Feb, 7.30pm
AROUND TOWN:
Antigone + Introduction by Rastko NovakoviÄ - A russian doll of the Antigone myth through the centuries: DaniĂšle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub's film version of Berthold Brecht's 1948 play âThe Antigone of Sophoclesâ, which in turn is based on Friedrich Hölderlin's 1804 translation of the ancient tragedy. In his version, written shortly after the end of the Second World War, Brecht interpreted the material as a parable of totalitarian rule and civil engagement. Huillet and Straub's film adaptation reduces the play to its essential content by largely dispensing with camera movement and cinematic dramaturgy and allowing the text to have a direct impact on the audience. GOETHE INSTITUTE - 21 Feb, 2.30pm
Crisis Acres (2025) â Screening & Q&A with Tom K Kemp - After the Single Use presents a screening of Crisis Acres (2025), followed by a remote Q&A with artist and filmmaker Tom K Kemp. In Crisis Acres, a group of experts design and test a âmegagameâ â one that simulates the daily running of an imaginary NHS hospital. Using elements from boardgaming, roleplay, and the lived experience of the 35 surgeons, clinicians, nurses, administrators, politicians, and chronic patients who take part, the megagame becomes a tool for analysing and diagnosing potential problems within the worldâs largest healthcare system, at multiple scales simultaneously. 50 GEORGE SQUARE - 19 Feb, 4pm
DV8 Film Club - IN THE DARK (2000) - In the second screening of the DV8 Film Club, Iâm delighted to present IN THE DARK, a criminally underseen, SOV horror-thriller directed by Clifton Holmes. The film follows Jane, a lonely librarian who finds a note at her desk with her name on it and a $50 bill, instructing her to play the game. She is helped by Brace, a new friend, in solving the puzzles and getting double the money every time she finds a new envelope. Jane and Brace quickly find out that she is playing a very dangerous game. Her strength, fortitude, and sanity are strained as she finds out just how far sheâll go for the cash - and the thrill.
